Chubby’s Cheese Steaks Review

Chubby’s Cheese Steaks in Roxborough Review

I tackled 2 major cheese steak joints in the Roxborough section of Philly today. They are both right across the street from one another similar to Pat’s and Geno’s in South Philly. The competition is pretty fierce too. This post will be about the newer of the two called Chubby’s Cheese Steaks.

Chubby’s Cheese Steaks was established in 1987 and is located at 5826 Henry Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19128 (Roxborough area). Chubby’s is a bar type cheese steak place which makes it unique compared to many cheese steak joints in South Philly. You can sit at the bar and eat you sandwich while ordering whatever special is on tap. There is a small TV there but it wasn’t on while I was there so it’s not much of a sports bar. What is interesting about this place is that it is a small little shop but yet very comforting. It is the type of place that you go to after a real stressful day of work to get two fixes that will cure your blues: a drink and a cheese steak.

The Philly cheese steak here is similar to the DAlessandro’s Steaks and Hoagies across the street. The roll was a soft type of Italian roll but a little crispier than its competition. The value was excellent. I ordered a Philly cheese steak with provolone cheese and it came out to about $6. The onions were larger sliced onions that were grilled slightly brown. The cheese was all wrapped up in the steak and melted nice. I would say that the sandwich needed a little more cheese though.

Chubby’s also used chopped meat in their sandwich as opposed to steak strips. The chef cooked a whole pile of chopped meat on the grill at one time Jim Steaks style. Chubby’s cheese steak was a decent size and a good amount for the buck. I will give them a green light but as my next review of Dalessandro’s will tell you, I liked them better out of the two steak joints. I also had several other testers with me and they came to the same conclusion that Dalessandro’s had a better Philly cheese steak.

  1. You haven't lived until you've eaten a buffalo chicken cheesesteak from Chubby's.

  2. You should always order your steak with extra cheese so you don't run into that problem. Most places except for Pats go too lighton the chees for my taste.

Appolo's pizza in East Falls has a very good cheesesteak. You might want to check them out.
